Great White Buffalo

My oh my, what a time at the cinema yesterday. I am still trying to articulate the hilarity that is Hot Tub Time Machine. Honestly, it was a top 5 laugh out loud cinema experience for me. Does that mean I think it is one of the funniest movies of all time? Hard to say because it takes time for a movie to take a place on that mantle. The timing couldn't have been better though. I went to see some stand up comedians the night before and the headliner was a prop comic/magician. I know, I know... not my idea. Needless to say though, I was in need of a good laugh

If you are a product of the 80s, this movie will destroy your ribcage. It stinks of 80s. That's a good thing. It isn't just that it is set in 1986 so it looks like 1986. It feels like an 80s comedy which is arguably the best decade ever for comedies. The advantage HTTM has though is that censors let a lot more go now than they did 24 years ago (when the movie was set).

The movie has been compared to (and held up to) The Hangover which I sort of get. It is about 4 buddies on a drunken journey. The similarities end there though. In The Hangover, the guys are trying to piece together what happened in the recent past. In HTTM, the guys know exactly how the day plays out and it is up to them to relive it (or do it differently if they so choose). It is like Hangover meets Back to the Future meets Groundhog Day meets Ski School 2.

Oh and speaking of Back to the Future, Crispin Glover is fantastic in a supporting role. Between HTTM and Alice in Wonderland, Glover is back in a big way. Loves it!

I won't get into a more detailed review because there are plenty of those already floating around. All I can say is that I very well might go see it again this week and I never go see movies in theatres more than once.

Do yourself a favour and check out HTTM. Unlike most comedies, the funniest stuff is not in the trailer. That is just the stuff they could actually show on TV.
